Viewing this webcam during daylight hours, you might see panda mama Mei Xiang (may-SHONG) and her male cub, Tai Shan--whose name means "peaceful mountain"--eating bamboo or sleeping.  If you’re particularly lucky, you might even see her newest baby cub.  Take your pick of two cameras.  Warning:  the pandas do a lot of sleeping.

webcam focused on Tejon Pass in Lebec, California

The Tejon Pass is at 4,144 feet and is often snowed in and closed for short periods during cold winter days. It is wise to check the weather on the Grapevine before setting out to cross through this pass. This Tejon Pass webcam shows still shots

The image below shows how the pass looked in December 2019 when I headed home from L.A. to the San Francisco Bay Area. Having seen this image showing that it was closed due to snow, I changed our route from Highway 5 to Highway 101 before we left, and that turned out to be a miserable trip, too. I later heard there was no good way to do that trip that day except by airplane.

Visitors disembark at Ayala Cove on Angel Island, as did the first explorers who sailed into the bay.  View it on this webcam.  The island served as a detention center for immigrants from 1910 to 1940 (the island was once called the “Ellis Island of the West”), as a prisoner-of-war processing facility, and as a Nike missile defense base from 1955 to 1962.

world's first webcam

world's first webcam

Here is a bit of webcam trivia for your enjoyment.  The very first webcam was witnessed by John Briggs and others in 1994.

"It was so novel being in Reston, Virginia and seeing real time that status of a coffee pot in England.
One function of our group was to distribute source code for computer water models to be run on main frame computers. We received a request from India with an email address. I emailed the man, we set up an FTP transfer (electronic file transfer), and he had the source code the same day I received his request. The power of the internet."
