Located 30 miles south of Lake Tahoe, Kirkwood Mountain Resort is a very large, yet usually uncrowded, family ski resort and is reputed to have the deepest snow in North America.

pandas: The Smithsonian National Zoo, Washington, D.C.

During daylight hours, you might see panda mama Mei Xiang (may-SHONG) and her male cub, Tai Shan--whose name means "peaceful mountain"--eating bamboo or sleeping.  If you’re particularly lucky, you might even see her newest baby cub.  Take your pick of two cameras.  Warning:  they do a lot of sleeping.

Tejon Pass; Lebec, CA

This pass is at 4,144 feet and is often snowed in and closed for short periods during cold winter days.  It is wise to check the weather on the Grapevine before setting out to cross through this pass.

Angel Island; San Francisco, CA

Visitors disembark at Ayala Cove (webcam), as did the first explorers who sailed into the bay.  The island served as a detention center for immigrants from 1910 to 1940 (the island was once called the “Ellis Island of the West”), as a prisoner-of-war processing facility, and as a Nike missile defense base from 1955 to 1962.
